What is laparoscopic tubectomy?

Tubectomy, also called female sterilisation, is a permanent method of family planning for women who are sure they do not want more children. Each month an egg travels from the ovary towards the uterus through a fallopian tube. In this operation we close both tubes, so that the egg and sperm cannot meet and pregnancy is prevented.

In laparoscopic tubectomy, our surgeon passes a laparoscope (a thin telescope with a camera) through a small cut near the navel to see the tubes, and closes each one, usually with a small ring or clip, or by sealing it. There is no large cut, and most women go home the same day or the next day.

We want every woman to understand clearly what this operation is not. It is not a treatment for any disease. The uterus and ovaries are not removed, so periods continue, and it does not cause weakness. It also does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Who may choose tubectomy

  • You have completed your family and do not want more children
  • You want a permanent method instead of daily or monthly family planning methods
  • Temporary methods have not suited you or have caused problems
  • Your doctor has advised that another pregnancy could be risky for your health
  • You and your husband have discussed the decision after counselling

When is the right time for female sterilisation?

Tubectomy is a choice, not a necessity. It suits a woman who has completed her family and has made the decision freely, without pressure from anyone. The woman's own written informed consent is required, and we take it before the operation. We encourage husband and wife to come together for counselling, so that both understand the operation is meant to be permanent. During counselling we also explain other options, such as Copper-T, pills, injections, or male sterilisation (vasectomy) for the husband.

Timing matters. We usually plan the operation in the first part of the menstrual cycle, a few days after a period, and we do a pregnancy test beforehand. After childbirth, we usually do laparoscopic tubectomy after about 6 weeks, when the uterus has returned to its normal size. Blood tests and a check-up confirm that you are fit for the procedure.

How is a laparoscopic tubectomy done?

  1. Counselling: we explain the permanent nature of the operation, the other options and the small chance of failure, and we take your written consent.
  2. We do a pregnancy test, blood tests and a general check-up.
  3. We usually plan the operation a few days after your period. Please come empty stomach, as our team advises.
  4. Our anaesthesia specialist decides the anaesthesia that suits you, often local anaesthesia with sedation (a medicine that makes you drowsy and relaxed), or general anaesthesia.
  5. Dr. Thakur makes a small cut near the navel, fills the abdomen with gas, and closes both tubes through the laparoscope, usually with small rings or clips.
  6. We let the gas out and close the cut with a stitch or two. You rest with us for a few hours before going home.

Tubectomy recovery time

Most women walk within a few hours and can eat normally the same day. Mild abdominal or shoulder pain for 1 to 2 days is common. Please keep the small wound clean and dry. Light work can usually be resumed in 2 to 3 days, but avoid heavy lifting for about a week. Sexual relations can usually resume after about a week, or when you feel comfortable, as we advise. Please come back to us for your follow-up visit. If you ever miss a period in later years, see a doctor at once, because a pregnancy after tubectomy, though uncommon, can be in the tube (ectopic).

Precautions after tubectomy: diet, rest and work

Diet: you can usually eat normal home-cooked food the same day. Drink enough water and eat dal, vegetables and fruit to avoid constipation. Usually no special food restrictions are needed.

Rest and work: please start walking within a few hours. Light work can usually be resumed in 2 to 3 days. Avoid lifting heavy weights for about a week. Sexual relations can usually resume after about a week, or when you feel comfortable, as we advise.

Wound care: keep the small wound clean and dry, and bathe when our team tells you it is safe. Mild abdominal or shoulder pain for 1 to 2 days is common.

Warning signs: please call us on +91 72739 94786 or come back to our hospital at once if you have fever, increasing abdominal pain, bleeding or pus from the wound, or fainting. In later years, see a doctor at once if you ever miss a period, because a pregnancy after tubectomy, though uncommon, can be in the tube (ectopic).

Benefits

  • A permanent method, with no daily pills or repeated visits
  • Only a small cut near the navel, leaving a small scar
  • A quick procedure, and most women go home the same day or the next day
  • The uterus and ovaries are not removed, so periods continue
  • Highly effective, though no method is completely free of failure
Possible risks:

Tubectomy is a common and usually safe operation, but like any operation it carries some risks. These include bleeding, infection at the cut, a reaction to anaesthesia and, rarely, injury to the bowel, bladder or a blood vessel, which may need a bigger operation. There is a small chance of pregnancy later. If it happens, it is more likely to be in the tube (ectopic pregnancy), which is an emergency. Rejoining the tubes is difficult, not always possible and not always successful, so the decision should be final. Through careful counselling, proper tests and an experienced surgical team, we work to keep these risks low.

Female sterilisation operation cost and Ayushman card status

Couples often ask us about the female sterilisation operation cost. We do not quote a fixed figure on the website, because the cost depends on your case. The main factors are the type of anaesthesia (often local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia), the tests needed such as a pregnancy test and blood tests, whether you go home the same day or stay overnight, a private room or the general ward, and medicines. After your consultation, we give you a clear written estimate before the procedure. If you have any questions first, please call or WhatsApp us on +91 72739 94786.

Ayushman card: our hospital has been empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY since about January 2022 (renewed in July 2025) for general and laparoscopic surgery packages. As of mid-2025, gynaecology packages, including tubectomy, were not part of our empanelment, so this procedure may not be covered with us. Empanelment can change, so please ask our Ayushman help desk for the current status.

Laparoscopic tubectomy in Gopalganj: frequently asked questions

How is a laparoscopic tubectomy in Gopalganj done, and how long does it take?

After counselling, written consent and a negative pregnancy test, our anaesthesia specialist gives anaesthesia, often local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia. Dr. Rajnish Kumar Thakur, our chief surgeon, then makes a small cut near the navel, fills the abdomen with gas, and closes both tubes through the laparoscope, usually with small rings or clips. The procedure usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, and most women go home the same day or the next day.

Can a tubectomy be reversed later?

Tubectomy should be treated as permanent. An operation to rejoin the tubes is sometimes possible, but it is a bigger operation, it is not available everywhere, and pregnancy afterwards is not assured. This is why we counsel every woman before surgery. We advise making this decision only when you are sure you do not want more children.

Will tubectomy cause weakness, weight gain or change my periods?

Tubectomy only closes the tubes. The uterus and ovaries are not removed, so hormones continue to be made and periods continue. It does not cause weakness, and it does not directly cause weight gain. Most women return to normal work within a few days. If you notice any unusual problem after the operation, please discuss it with Dr. Thakur at your follow-up visit.

Is the husband's consent needed? Why is counselling for both partners advised?

The woman's own written informed consent is required, and the decision must be hers, made freely. We encourage husband and wife to attend counselling together, because it is a permanent decision for the family. During counselling we also explain other choices, such as Copper-T, pills, injections, or male sterilisation (vasectomy), which is a smaller operation for the husband.

When is the right time to have a tubectomy?

We usually do it in the first part of the menstrual cycle, a few days after a period, once a pregnancy test is negative. After childbirth, we usually do laparoscopic tubectomy after about 6 weeks. If you are not fully sure that you never want another child, we advise using a temporary method for now and deciding later.

What is the tubectomy recovery time?

Most women walk within a few hours and eat normally the same day. Mild abdominal or shoulder pain for 1 to 2 days is common and settles with simple medicines. Light work can usually be resumed in 2 to 3 days, and heavy lifting should be avoided for about a week. Sexual relations can usually resume after about a week, or when you feel comfortable, as we advise.

What precautions should I take after the operation?

Keep the small wound clean and dry, and bathe when our team says it is safe. Eat normal home-cooked food and drink enough water. Avoid lifting heavy weights for about a week. Please come back to us at once if you have fever, increasing pain, bleeding or pus from the wound. In later years, see a doctor straight away if you ever miss a period, because a pregnancy after tubectomy can be in the tube.

What decides the female sterilisation operation cost?

The cost depends on the type of anaesthesia, the tests needed such as a pregnancy test and blood tests, whether you go home the same day or stay overnight, the room you choose (private room or general ward), and medicines. We do not quote a fixed price on the website. After your consultation, we give you a clear written estimate before the procedure. Please call or WhatsApp us on +91 72739 94786 with any questions.

Is tubectomy covered under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY?

As of mid-2025, gynaecology packages were not part of our Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY empanelment at Dr. R.K. Thakur Hospital, so tubectomy may not be covered under the scheme with us. Empanelment can change, so please ask our Ayushman help desk for the current status, and bring your Ayushman card and Aadhaar card. We explain any costs clearly before the procedure.
