Hypospadias Repair
With hypospadias repair, we correct a urine opening that is not at the tip of the penis. We commonly perform the surgery between 6 and 18 months of age, sometimes in two stages.
With orchidopexy, we bring an undescended testis down into the scrotum and fix it there. We usually advise surgery by 6 to 18 months of age to protect fertility and allow easy checks later in life.
At Dr. R.K. Thakur Hospital, we perform undescended testis surgery in Gopalganj, called orchidopexy, for baby boys and older boys whose testis has not come down into the scrotum. Parents often notice an empty or small scrotum on one side, and many are told to keep waiting. We explain the best age for undescended testis surgery, usually 6 to 18 months, and what to expect before and after. The operation is performed by Dr. Rajnish Kumar Thakur (MBBS, MS General Surgery), our founder and chief surgeon, and our Senior Consultant Laparoscopic, Laser, Urology and General Surgeon, whose practice here includes paediatric surgery, with an anaesthesia specialist on our team. Families come to us from Gopalganj, Siwan, Chhapra, Motihari, Bettiah, Kushinagar and Deoria, including parents looking for undescended testis treatment near Siwan. Parents trust Dr. Thakur for his 16+ years of surgical experience and his habit of explaining the plan clearly to the family. Please visit our OPD, Monday to Friday, 10 am to 7 pm, or call or WhatsApp us on +91 72739 94786.
Before birth, the testes develop inside the belly and then move down into the scrotum. In some boys, one or both testes do not come down fully. This is called an undescended testis, and it is more common in babies born early. In some babies the testis comes down on its own in the first few months of life, but if it has not come down by about 6 months of age, it usually will not.
Orchidopexy is an operation to bring the testis down into the scrotum and fix it there. Usually one small cut is made in the groin and another in the scrotum. If the testis cannot be felt at all, we may use a diagnostic laparoscopy (a small camera passed through a tiny cut in the belly) to find it.

Parents should get a baby boy checked if the scrotum looks empty on one or both sides. Our surgeon examines the child gently, sometimes more than once, because some testes move up and down with cold or touch (retractile testis) and do not need surgery. An ultrasound may be advised in some cases, but a careful examination by an experienced surgeon matters most.
We usually advise surgery by 6 to 18 months of age. If an undescended testis is left untreated, it can lead to:
Older children who are found late should still be seen soon. Our surgeon advises the right plan for your child.
Most children are playing normally within a few days. Give pain medicines as advised, keep the wound clean and dry, and follow our bathing advice. Loose clothing helps. Avoid riding toys, cycling and rough play for about 2 to 4 weeks or as advised. Please come for follow-up visits so our surgeon can check the position and growth of the testis. Please contact us if there is fever, increasing swelling or redness, or discharge from the wound.
Possible risks include bleeding, infection, swelling, the testis moving up again and needing another operation and, uncommonly, damage to its blood supply leading to shrinking of the testis. Anaesthesia risks in children are low and are assessed before surgery. We reduce these risks with gentle technique, careful handling of the cord and regular follow-up checks.
The cost of orchidopexy depends on whether the testis can be felt, whether one or both sides are affected, whether a diagnostic laparoscopy is needed to find a testis inside the belly, whether surgery is done in one or two stages, tests such as an ultrasound, the anaesthesia, day-care or an overnight stay, the room type and medicines. We do not publish fixed prices. After our surgeon examines your child, we give you a clear estimate before admission, and you are welcome to WhatsApp reports first. Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY: as of mid-2025, urology packages were not part of our empanelment, which covered general and laparoscopic surgery packages. Orchidopexy may fall under a general or paediatric surgery package, so please ask our Ayushman help desk to confirm for your child before admission.
Orchidopexy and paediatric surgery are among the procedures performed by our chief surgeon, Dr. Rajnish Kumar Thakur, who has 16+ years of surgical experience and more than 10,000 surgeries performed, with experience at IGIMS Patna and Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi. He is known for precision, a calm approach and clear communication, which reassures worried parents. Children need safe anaesthesia, and he works with our anaesthesia specialist, Dr. Neeraj Chaturvedi. Please call or WhatsApp us on +91 72739 94786.
We usually advise surgery between 6 and 18 months of age, once it is clear that the testis will not come down on its own. Operating early gives the testis the best chance of healthy development, which helps fertility later. If your child is older and the problem was found late, the operation is still useful and should be done soon after diagnosis.
Most boys with one undescended testis that is treated in time have a good chance of fathering children later. The risk of lower fertility is higher when both testes are undescended or when surgery is done late. This is why we advise early surgery. Our surgeon checks the testis at follow-up, and as an adult your son should examine his testes regularly.
Orchidopexy is a common operation in young children. Before surgery, the child is checked for fitness, and our anaesthesia specialist explains the fasting times and the anaesthesia plan. A local block helps control pain after surgery. Most children go home the same day or the next day and are playing normally within a few days. Our surgeon explains the specific risks for your child before you decide.
If the testis cannot be felt even under anaesthesia, it may be inside the belly, very small, or absent. A diagnostic laparoscopy, using a small camera through a tiny cut, helps find it. Depending on what is found, the testis may be brought down in one operation or in two stages several months apart. Our surgeon explains the options to the parents before surgery.
Coverage depends on the specialities a hospital is empanelled for and the package your child's procedure falls under. As of mid-2025, our empanelment covered general and laparoscopic surgery packages, while urology packages were not included. Orchidopexy may fall under a general or paediatric surgery package, so please ask our Ayushman help desk to check before admission. For patients who are not covered, we explain the costs clearly before admission.
Under general anaesthesia, our surgeon makes a small cut in the groin, finds the testis and gently frees it along with its blood supply. A small pocket is then made in the scrotum through a second small cut, and the testis is placed and fixed there with stitches. If the testis cannot be felt, a diagnostic laparoscopy is done first. A local block helps control pain after surgery.
The operation usually takes 45 to 90 minutes for one side, and a little longer for both sides or if laparoscopy is needed. Most children go home the same day or after one night. Your child must come fasting, as our anaesthesia team advises. If the testis is inside the belly, surgery is sometimes done in two stages several months apart.
Most children are playing normally within a few days. Swelling and bruising around the wound settle over 1 to 2 weeks. Keep your child away from riding toys, cycling and rough play for about 2 to 4 weeks. Stitches usually dissolve on their own. The first follow-up visit checks healing, and later visits check that the testis stays in place and grows.
Sometimes, in the first months of life. Many testes that are not in place at birth come down on their own within about 6 months. After that, it rarely happens, and medicines or injections are not usually advised as treatment. That is why we plan surgery between 6 and 18 months. A retractile testis, which moves up and down, usually needs only regular checks, not surgery.
It depends on whether the testis can be felt, one or both sides, the need for a diagnostic laparoscopy, one or two stages, tests, the anaesthesia, day-care or an overnight stay, the room type and medicines. We do not quote a fixed price without examining the child. We give you a clear estimate before admission. If you have an Ayushman card, please ask our help desk whether your child's procedure is covered.
