Breast Cancer Surgery
We care for women with breast cancer at Dr. R.K. Thakur Hospital, Gopalganj, from triple assessment and staging to mastectomy or breast conserving surgery, lymph node surgery, arm care and emotional support.
We assess a breast lump carefully with examination, imaging and a needle test, and remove a fibroadenoma when needed, with privacy and a female attendant present.
If you or a woman in your family has found a lump in the breast, we offer a careful breast lump operation in Gopalganj, always after the right checks. At Dr. R.K. Thakur Hospital, every breast lump first goes through triple assessment (examination, ultrasound or mammography, and a needle test), and we advise fibroadenoma removal surgery only when it is needed, because many small fibroadenomas can be watched safely. The operation is performed by Dr. Rajnish Kumar Thakur, our founder and chief surgeon, MS (General Surgery), and we respect your privacy at every step, with a female attendant present during the examination. Women come to us from Gopalganj, Siwan, Chhapra, Motihari, Bettiah, Kushinagar and Deoria. Families trust Dr. Thakur for his 16+ years of experience, his work at IGIMS Patna and Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, and his calm, clear explanations. Our visiting surgical oncologist holds a monthly OPD. To consult, please visit our OPD (Monday to Friday, 10 am to 7 pm) or WhatsApp your reports to +91 72739 94786.
Finding a lump in the breast is worrying, but most breast lumps in young women are not cancer. The most common harmless lump in women aged about 15 to 35 years is a fibroadenoma: a smooth, firm, rubbery lump that moves easily under the fingers. Other common causes are cysts and lumpiness that changes with periods.
Every breast lump is checked with triple assessment, the standard method:
When a fibroadenoma needs removal, we take it out through a small cut, often placed at the edge of the areola (the dark skin around the nipple) or along skin lines for a better scar. The lump is sent for histopathology (a biopsy report).

A small fibroadenoma confirmed by triple assessment often needs no operation, only regular check-ups. Some become smaller over time. We usually advise removal if the lump is large (often more than about 3 cm), growing, painful, causing worry, or if the tests are not fully clear.
Please see a doctor without delay if you notice:
These signs do not always mean cancer, but they need urgent tests. If cancer is suspected, our surgeon and our visiting surgical oncologist plan further treatment together, including breast surgery when needed.
Most women go home the same day or the next day. Wear a well-fitting, supportive bra day and night for about a week to reduce pain and swelling. Keep the dressing dry until advised. Light work can usually resume in 2 to 3 days. Stitches, if not dissolvable, are usually removed in 7 to 10 days. Please collect the histopathology report and show it to our doctor at follow-up. Continue regular self-examination of both breasts.
Most women go home the same day or the next day. These steps help the wound heal comfortably:
Fibroadenoma removal is usually a minor operation. Possible risks include bleeding or a collection of blood under the wound, infection, a visible scar, a small change in breast shape or nipple sensation, and new fibroadenomas forming in the future. Breastfeeding is not usually affected. We lower these risks with careful technique, a supportive dressing and clear aftercare advice.
There is no single price, because the tests and the operation depend on your lump. The cost mainly depends on:
After the examination and tests, we give you a clear estimate before the operation, and you can send your reports on WhatsApp first. If the tests show cancer, we discuss the treatment plan and its costs separately with you, together with our oncologist. Our hospital is empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for general surgery packages. Our Ayushman help desk confirms whether your operation is covered, and under which package, so please bring your Ayushman card and Aadhaar card and ask before admission.
We respect every woman's privacy and comfort at every step. The examination is done in a private room with a female attendant present, and you are welcome to bring a female family member. We explain the findings calmly and clearly.
Dr. Rajnish Kumar Thakur, MS (General Surgery), with 16+ years of surgical experience, performs fibroadenoma excision and breast tumour surgery at our hospital. Ultrasound and a pathology lab are in the same building. When cancer is suspected, you can see Dr. (Ex Capt) Feroz Pasha, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology, at our oncology OPD on the 1st Saturday of every month.
No. Most breast lumps in young women are harmless, such as fibroadenomas or cysts. However, no lump should be ignored. Triple assessment, which means examination, imaging and a needle test, gives a clear answer in most cases. The risk of cancer rises with age, so women above about 35 to 40 years with a new lump should get it checked promptly.
Stan me ganth is the everyday term for a lump in the breast. In young women it is most often a fibroadenoma or a cyst, which are not cancer. The risk of cancer rises with age, especially after about 35 to 40 years. Every lump should still be checked with examination, imaging and a needle test, because an early, clear diagnosis makes treatment simpler whatever the cause.
Often, yes. A small fibroadenoma confirmed by triple assessment can usually be left alone and checked from time to time, and some become smaller on their own. Tablets and creams do not dissolve it. We usually advise surgery if it is large, growing, painful or causing worry, or if the tests are not fully clear. Our surgeon explains both options so that you can decide comfortably.
After triple assessment confirms the type of lump, we remove it under local or general anaesthesia, depending on its size and position. Our surgeon makes a small cut, often at the edge of the areola or along skin lines, removes the lump completely and closes the skin. The lump is sent for a biopsy report. The operation usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, and most women go home the same day or the next day.
Yes. Your privacy and comfort come first. The examination is done in a private room with a female attendant present, and you may also bring a female family member. You can ask any question freely. Our doctor explains what is being checked and why, and you can ask to stop at any time.
Removal of a fibroadenoma usually does not affect the ability to breastfeed in the future. The cut is kept small and placed at the edge of the areola or along skin lines where possible, so the scar is usually small and fades with time. The size of the scar depends on the size and position of the lump.
Most women return to light work in 2 to 3 days. Wear a well-fitting, supportive bra day and night for about a week to reduce pain and swelling. Keep the dressing dry until advised, and avoid lifting heavy things or vigorous arm movement for about a week. No special diet is needed. Please collect the biopsy report and show it to our doctor at the follow-up visit.
Once a month, a few days after your period ends, look at your breasts in a mirror for any change in shape or skin. Then, lying down and standing, feel each breast and armpit with the flat of your fingers in small circles. Women who no longer have periods can choose a fixed date each month. Please show any new lump, skin change or nipple discharge to a doctor.
The cost depends on the tests needed (breast ultrasound, mammography when advised, FNAC or core biopsy), local or general anaesthesia, the size and number of lumps, day-care or an overnight stay, the histopathology report and medicines. We give you a clear estimate after the examination and tests, and you can send your reports on WhatsApp first. Ayushman card holders can ask our help desk about coverage.
Our hospital is empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for general surgery packages, and fibroadenoma and breast lump excision are on our list of procedures. Our Ayushman help desk confirms whether your operation is covered, and under which package. Please bring your Ayushman card and a photo ID such as Aadhaar, and ask our help desk before admission.
Yes. Women come to us regularly from Motihari, Kushinagar, Siwan, Chhapra, Bettiah and Deoria. Please send any breast ultrasound, mammography or FNAC report on WhatsApp to +91 72739 94786 first. Visit our OPD from Monday to Friday, 10 am to 7 pm, with a female family member if you like. Ultrasound and the needle test can usually be arranged at our hospital, so fewer trips are needed.
We suggest choosing a surgeon who completes triple assessment before any operation, respects your privacy and explains the findings clearly. Dr. Rajnish Kumar Thakur, our founder and chief surgeon, MS (General Surgery), has 16+ years of surgical experience and has worked at IGIMS Patna and Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi. Ultrasound and a pathology lab are in our hospital, and our visiting surgical oncologist holds an OPD on the 1st Saturday of every month.
