What is an umbilical hernia?

An umbilical hernia is a soft bulge at or around the navel (belly button). It happens when fat or a loop of intestine pushes out through a weak spot in the muscle wall of the tummy. When the bulge is immediately above or beside the navel, it is called a paraumbilical hernia. It is common in adults, especially women after several pregnancies and people who are overweight.

An epigastric hernia is a similar small hernia in the middle line of the tummy, between the navel and the lower end of the breastbone. It is often a small, sometimes tender lump.

A hernia does not go away with medicines or exercise. Surgery closes the weak spot: very small hernias with strong stitches, and most adult hernias with a mesh (a soft surgical net) that supports the muscle wall. Depending on the hernia size and your health, we do this through a small cut near the navel or by laparoscopic hernia repair (keyhole surgery).

Umbilical and epigastric hernia symptoms

  • A soft bulge at or near the navel that gets bigger when you cough, strain or stand
  • A small lump in the middle of the upper tummy, above the navel (epigastric hernia)
  • Dragging pain or discomfort around the navel, especially after lifting or long standing
  • A bulge that goes back in when you lie down
  • Warning sign: the bulge becomes hard and painful, does not go back, and there is vomiting

When is an umbilical hernia operation needed?

In adults, we usually advise surgery once such a hernia is found, because it tends to grow and can trap the intestine. Our surgeon confirms the diagnosis by examination and an ultrasound of the abdomen, and checks blood tests, sugar and fitness for anaesthesia before planning the operation.

In small children, a navel hernia often closes on its own by about 4 to 5 years of age; we consider surgery if it persists beyond this age, is large or causes problems.

Please come to our emergency immediately if the bulge becomes painful, hard or red, cannot be pushed back, or if there is vomiting or the tummy swells. This may mean the intestine is trapped and its blood supply is at risk, which needs urgent surgery.

How is an umbilical hernia operation done?

  1. OPD examination, ultrasound of the abdomen and routine blood tests, including sugar
  2. Fitness check by our anaesthesia specialist and clear fasting instructions
  3. Spinal or general anaesthesia, as decided for your case
  4. The hernia contents are gently pushed back into the abdomen
  5. The weak spot is closed with stitches and, in most adults, strengthened with a mesh by open or laparoscopic surgery
  6. The wound is closed and you are shifted to the ward, where our team keeps you under observation

Umbilical hernia surgery recovery time

Most patients walk on the same day or the next morning and start light food within hours, as advised. Keep the wound dry until your surgeon says you can bathe. Stitches, if not dissolvable, are usually removed in 7 to 10 days. Desk work and light housework can usually resume in 1 to 2 weeks. Avoid lifting heavy weights, such as water buckets or sacks, for about 4 to 6 weeks. Avoid constipation, get any cough treated, and please come for follow-up as advised.

Diet and precautions after umbilical hernia surgery

These steps help your repair heal well:

  • What to eat: start with liquids and then light food such as dal, khichdi, curd and soft roti, as advised. Eat green vegetables, fruits such as papaya, and daliya, and drink enough water so that you do not strain in the toilet.
  • What to avoid: very oily, fried and spicy food in the first week, and smoking, gutkha and alcohol.
  • Activity: walk a little several times a day from the first day. Do not lift heavy things such as water buckets, gas cylinders or sacks for about 4 to 6 weeks. Support the wound with your hand or a pillow when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wound and bathing: keep the dressing clean and dry, and bathe only when your surgeon allows.
  • Work: desk work and light housework usually resume in 1 to 2 weeks; farm work or heavy labour only after Dr. Thakur advises.
  • Please come back early if you have fever, increasing pain, redness or pus from the wound, a new bulge, vomiting or trouble passing stool.

Benefits

  • Closes the weak spot and stops the hernia from growing
  • Removes the risk of the intestine getting trapped, which is an emergency
  • Mesh repair lowers the chance of the hernia coming back in adults
  • Laparoscopic option for suitable patients, with small cuts and usually less pain
  • Short hospital stay for most patients
Possible risks:

Like any operation, hernia repair can have risks: wound infection, a collection of fluid (seroma) or blood under the skin, pain, reaction to anaesthesia and, rarely, mesh infection, injury to the intestine or the hernia coming back. The risk is higher with obesity, diabetes, smoking and long-standing cough. We lower these risks through careful checks before surgery, sugar control, sterile theatre practice and clear wound care advice.

Cost of an umbilical hernia operation in Gopalganj and the Ayushman card

The cost is not the same for every patient, so we do not quote one fixed price. It mainly depends on:

  • the type of repair: stitches alone, open mesh repair or laparoscopic mesh repair
  • the size of the hernia and of the mesh needed
  • tests before surgery, such as ultrasound, blood tests, sugar and ECG
  • the type of anaesthesia, the number of days in hospital and your room (general ward or private room)
  • medicines, and whether a trapped hernia needs emergency surgery

After the OPD examination and reports, we give you a clear written estimate before admission. You can also send your reports on WhatsApp first. Our hospital is empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for general surgery packages, which include hernia repair. Our Ayushman help desk confirms the exact package and your eligibility, so please bring your Ayushman card and Aadhaar card to the help desk before admission.

Umbilical hernia operation: frequently asked questions

Is umbilical hernia treatment without surgery possible?

In adults, no. Medicines, belts or exercises cannot close the gap in the muscle. A belt may give short-term comfort, but the hernia usually keeps growing slowly. In small children, a navel hernia often closes by itself by 4 to 5 years of age, so we usually wait and watch. For adults, we advise a planned operation, which is safer than waiting for an emergency.

How is an umbilical hernia operation done?

After an examination, ultrasound and blood tests, you are given spinal or general anaesthesia. Our surgeon makes a small cut near the navel, or a few small keyhole cuts in laparoscopic repair, gently pushes the fat or intestine back inside and closes the weak spot. We close very small hernias with strong stitches and cover most adult hernias with a soft mesh for support. The wound is then closed.

What happens on the day of an umbilical hernia operation in Gopalganj, and how long does it take?

Please come fasting, as our anaesthesia team advises, with an attendant and your reports. After final checks, the operation usually takes 45 to 90 minutes, and larger hernias can take longer. Our team then watches you closely in the ward. Most patients start sips and light food within hours, walk the same day or the next morning, and go home in 1 to 2 days.

What is the umbilical hernia surgery recovery time?

Most patients go home in 1 to 2 days. Desk work and light housework can usually resume in 1 to 2 weeks. Stitches, if not dissolvable, come out in 7 to 10 days. Avoid lifting heavy weights for about 4 to 6 weeks. Recovery can be slower after a large hernia or an emergency operation, and our surgeon guides you at each follow-up visit.

What should I eat after umbilical hernia surgery, and what precautions should I take?

Start with liquids and light home food such as dal, khichdi and curd, then a normal diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit and water, so that you do not get constipated and strain. Avoid oily, spicy food for the first week. Do not lift heavy weights for about 4 to 6 weeks, support the wound when coughing, and keep the dressing dry until your surgeon allows bathing.

Is mesh safe, and will I feel it inside?

Surgical mesh has been used in hernia repair around the world for many years and helps lower the chance of the hernia coming back. Most patients do not feel it once the wound has healed. Like any implant, it has small risks such as infection, which our surgeon explains before surgery. For very small hernias, stitches alone may be enough.

What is an epigastric hernia, and is it treated the same way?

An epigastric hernia is a small hernia in the middle of the upper tummy, between the navel and the breastbone. Often only fat pushes through, causing a small lump that can be tender. It is repaired in a similar way, with stitches or mesh, usually through a small cut. Some people have more than one small hernia, which our surgeon checks for.

What decides the cost of an umbilical hernia operation in Gopalganj?

We do not quote a fixed price, because the cost depends on your hernia. The main factors are open or laparoscopic repair, the size of the mesh, tests, anaesthesia, the days in hospital, the room type and medicines. After the examination and reports, we give you a clear written estimate before admission. Ayushman card holders can ask our help desk whether their package is covered under our general surgery empanelment.

Is umbilical hernia surgery covered under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY?

Hernia repair falls under our Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY empanelment for general surgery, for eligible card holders. Our Ayushman help desk confirms the exact package and your eligibility, so please do not assume coverage before this check. Bring your Ayushman card and a photo ID such as Aadhaar, and visit the help desk before admission.

I live in Siwan, Chhapra or Kushinagar. Can I come to Gopalganj for my hernia operation?

Yes. We regularly treat patients from Siwan, Chhapra, Motihari, Bettiah, Kushinagar and Deoria. To save a trip, please send your ultrasound and blood reports on WhatsApp to +91 72739 94786 first. On the OPD day, bring all reports, your medicines list, a photo ID and your Ayushman card if you have one. Most tests can be done at our hospital, and our surgeon plans the date with you.

Is 'doorbeen se hernia ka operation' possible for a navel hernia?

Doorbeen se operation is the everyday name for laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. For some umbilical hernias, especially larger ones or when there is more than one gap, laparoscopic mesh repair through a few small cuts is a good option. Many small navel hernias heal equally well after repair through one small cut at the navel. Our surgeon recommends the method that suits your hernia and your health.
