Liver Abscess Treatment in Gopalganj (Pus in the Liver)

Liver Abscess Treatment and Drainage

We treat pus in the liver with medicines, ultrasound-guided needle aspiration or catheter drainage when needed, and emergency surgery if the abscess bursts.

If you have fever with pain below the right ribs and a scan shows pus in the liver, we provide complete liver abscess treatment in Gopalganj. At Dr. R.K. Thakur Hospital, Dr. Rajnish Kumar Thakur, our founder and chief surgeon, MS (General Surgery), manages the full course of care: medicines, repeat ultrasound scans, ultrasound-guided liver abscess drainage with a needle or a thin tube when needed, and emergency surgery in the few cases where the abscess bursts. What is a liver abscess?

A liver abscess is a collection of pus inside the liver. It is a serious infection that needs prompt treatment. There are two main types:

  • Amoebic liver abscess: caused by an amoeba (a tiny germ) that enters through contaminated water or food and travels from the intestine to the liver. It is common in India and more frequent in adult men, especially those who drink alcohol.
  • Pyogenic liver abscess: caused by bacteria, often linked to gallbladder or bile duct problems, other infections in the abdomen, or diabetes.

Treatment starts with medicines against the amoeba, and antibiotics. Many amoebic abscesses heal with medicines alone. When the abscess is large, not improving or at risk of bursting, we remove the pus through the skin under ultrasound guidance, either with a needle (needle aspiration) or by placing a thin tube (catheter or pigtail drainage). Open surgery is needed only in a few cases, such as when the abscess bursts.

Liver abscess symptoms

  • Fever with chills lasting several days
  • Pain or heaviness in the right upper abdomen, below the ribs
  • Pain that spreads to the right shoulder or gets worse on deep breathing
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, weakness and weight loss
  • Yellow eyes or dark yellow urine in some patients
  • Cough or breathlessness if the abscess is near the diaphragm

When is liver abscess drainage needed?

Please see a doctor quickly if you have several days of fever with chills and pain in the right upper abdomen. We confirm the diagnosis with an ultrasound of the abdomen and blood tests, such as a blood count and liver function tests. A CT scan may be advised in some cases.

We usually advise drainage when:

  • the abscess is large
  • fever and pain do not improve after a few days of medicines
  • the abscess is in the left part of the liver or close to the surface, where the risk of bursting is higher
  • the abscess is pyogenic (bacterial) and sizeable, or the type is unclear

Emergency surgery (laparotomy) is needed if the abscess bursts into the abdomen, which causes sudden severe pain, a hard tummy and shock. Please come to our emergency immediately if this happens.

How is a liver abscess treated?

  1. Ultrasound of the abdomen and blood tests to confirm the abscess and its type
  2. Medicines against the amoeba and antibiotics, with fluids and fever control
  3. Close watch on fever and pain, with a repeat ultrasound
  4. Ultrasound-guided needle aspiration under local anaesthesia, when needed
  5. Catheter (pigtail) drainage for large or thick abscesses, left in place for some days
  6. Emergency surgery (laparotomy) if the abscess bursts

Recovery after liver abscess treatment

Fever usually settles within a few days of effective treatment, but please complete the full course of medicines even if you feel well. If a drainage tube is in place, keep it secure and clean and note the amount of drainage as we teach you. Eat light, nourishing food and avoid alcohol completely. We repeat ultrasound scans at follow-up; the cavity in the liver can take weeks to months to disappear fully on the scan, even after you feel well. Drink boiled or safe water to prevent amoebic infection.

Diet in liver abscess and precautions at home

Careful home care helps the liver heal and prevents the problem from coming back:

  • Medicines: complete the full course, even after the fever settles.
  • Drainage tube: if one is in place, keep it secure and clean, and note the amount of drainage as we teach you.
  • What to eat: light, freshly cooked home food such as dal, rice, roti, khichdi, curd, green vegetables and fruit, in small, frequent meals if appetite is poor.
  • What to avoid: alcohol completely, oily and fried food, outside food, and any herbal liver tonic without your doctor's advice.
  • Safe water: drink boiled or safe water, wash hands before eating and after using the toilet, and wash fruit and vegetables well.
  • Follow-up: repeat ultrasound scans as advised; the cavity can take weeks to months to disappear on the scan, even after you feel well.
  • Please come back at once if the fever returns, the pain increases, the eyes turn yellow, you feel breathless, or there is sudden severe abdominal pain.

Benefits

  • Most patients recover with medicines, with or without needle drainage
  • Ultrasound-guided drainage avoids open surgery in most cases
  • Quick relief of fever and pain once the pus is removed
  • Lowers the risk of the abscess bursting
  • Our emergency surgery and ICU are available if complications occur
Possible risks:

A liver abscess can be dangerous if it bursts into the abdomen, the chest or the covering of the heart, so timely treatment matters. Needle aspiration and catheter drainage have small risks such as bleeding, pain, leakage around the tube, the tube slipping and the need for repeat drainage. Surgery carries the risks of major abdominal surgery. We lower these risks with ultrasound guidance, careful monitoring and quick action if the condition worsens.

Cost of liver abscess treatment in Gopalganj and the Ayushman card

The cost of treating a liver abscess depends on how much treatment is needed, so no single price can be given. It mainly depends on:

  • medicines alone, or needle aspiration, or catheter (pigtail) drainage
  • the number of ultrasound scans and blood tests, such as blood counts and liver function tests
  • the days in hospital (usually 3 to 7) and your room
  • emergency surgery and ICU care, in the few cases where the abscess bursts

After the ultrasound and blood tests, our doctor explains the plan and gives you an estimate, and you can send your reports on WhatsApp first. Our hospital is empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for general surgery packages, and liver abscess drainage is on our list of procedures. The exact package depends on whether you need medicines only, drainage or surgery, and is confirmed by our Ayushman help desk, so please bring your Ayushman card and Aadhaar card at admission.

Liver abscess: frequently asked questions

What causes a liver abscess?

In India, the most common type is the amoebic liver abscess, caused by a germ that spreads through contaminated water or food. It is more common in adult men and in people who drink alcohol. Pyogenic abscesses are caused by bacteria and are often linked to gallstones, a blocked bile duct, other infections in the abdomen, or diabetes. The treatment depends on the type.

What is 'liver me pus' or 'liver ka phoda'?

Liver me pus and liver ka phoda are everyday names for a liver abscess, a collection of pus inside the liver. In India it is most often caused by an amoeba from contaminated water or food, and sometimes by bacteria. Fever with chills and pain below the right ribs are the usual signs. It needs prompt treatment, and most patients recover well with medicines, with or without drainage.

How is a liver abscess treated, and how long does it take?

We start treatment with medicines against the amoeba and antibiotics, often through a drip at first, with fluids and fever control. We watch the abscess with repeat ultrasound. If it is large or not improving, we remove the pus through the skin under ultrasound guidance with a needle or a thin tube (pigtail catheter), which usually takes 20 to 45 minutes. Most patients stay with us for 3 to 7 days.

Is liver abscess treatment without surgery possible?

Yes, in most cases. Many amoebic abscesses heal with medicines alone. We drain large abscesses, or those not improving, through the skin with a needle or a thin tube under ultrasound guidance, without open surgery. Open surgery is needed mainly when the abscess bursts or drainage does not work. Our surgeon decides based on the ultrasound and how you respond.

Is liver abscess drainage with a needle painful?

We numb the skin with a local anaesthetic injection before the needle or tube is placed, so most patients feel pressure and some discomfort rather than sharp pain. We give pain medicines afterwards. The procedure is done under ultrasound so that our doctor can see the needle's path. If a tube is left in, we remove it once drainage stops and the scan improves.

How long does recovery from a liver abscess take?

Fever usually settles within a few days of effective treatment, and most people slowly regain their strength over the next few weeks. Please complete the medicines even if you feel well. The cavity in the liver can take weeks to months to disappear fully on ultrasound, so we repeat scans at follow-up. A drainage tube, if placed, is removed once drainage stops and the scan improves.

What is the right diet in liver abscess?

Eat light, freshly cooked home food such as dal, rice, roti, khichdi, curd, green vegetables and fruit, in small, frequent meals if your appetite is poor. Enough protein helps recovery. Avoid alcohol completely, and avoid oily, fried and outside food while you recover. Drink boiled or safe water, wash hands before eating, and do not take herbal liver tonics without your doctor's advice.

Why must I avoid alcohol after a liver abscess?

Alcohol puts extra load on the liver and is linked to a higher risk of amoebic liver abscess. During treatment and recovery, the liver needs rest to heal. Avoiding alcohol completely helps healing and lowers the chance of the problem coming back. Please ask our doctor for help if you find it difficult to stop drinking.

What decides the cost of treating a liver abscess?

The cost depends on whether medicines alone are enough or needle aspiration or catheter drainage is needed, the number of ultrasound scans and blood tests, the days in hospital, the room, and whether emergency surgery or ICU care is needed if the abscess bursts. After the ultrasound and blood tests, our doctor explains the plan and gives an estimate. Ayushman card holders should meet our help desk early.

Is liver abscess treatment in Gopalganj covered under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY?

Liver abscess drainage and surgery fall under our Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY empanelment for general surgery, for eligible card holders. The exact package depends on whether you need medicines only, drainage or surgery, and is confirmed by our Ayushman help desk. Please bring your Ayushman card and a photo ID such as Aadhaar, and ask our help desk before admission.

I live in Chhapra or Motihari. Can I get liver abscess treatment in Gopalganj?

Yes. We regularly treat patients from Chhapra, Motihari, Siwan, Bettiah, Kushinagar and Deoria. With fever and pain on the right side of the abdomen, please come early rather than waiting. Send any ultrasound or blood reports on WhatsApp to +91 72739 94786 first. Because repeat ultrasound scans are needed during follow-up, we plan the follow-up dates with you so that travel is easier.
