At Dr. R.K. Thakur Hospital, we offer varicose veins laser treatment in Gopalganj for swollen, aching leg veins (पैरों की फूली हुई नसें), starting with a careful check of your veins. Varicose veins laser treatment in Gopalganj: what is EVLA?

Varicose veins (पैरों की फूली हुई नसें) are swollen, twisted veins that bulge under the skin of the legs. Veins have small valves that keep blood moving up towards the heart. When these valves become weak, blood pools in the leg, and the veins stretch and swell.

They are more common in people whose work keeps them standing for long hours, such as teachers, shopkeepers, cooks and security staff, and also after pregnancy, with age, extra weight or a family history. Some people have only visible veins. Others get aching, heavy legs, ankle swelling, itching, darkening of the skin, and in long-standing cases a wound (ulcer) near the ankle.

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) treats the faulty main vein from inside. Guided by ultrasound, we pass a thin laser fibre into the vein through a needle puncture, and the laser heat seals it shut. Blood then flows through the healthy deeper veins.

Varicose veins symptoms: swollen, aching leg veins

  • Bulging, twisted or rope-like veins on the legs
  • Aching, heaviness or tiredness in the legs, worse at the end of the day
  • Swelling around the ankles
  • Night cramps, or itching over the veins
  • Darkening or hardening of the skin near the ankle
  • A wound (ulcer) near the ankle that does not heal, or bleeding from a vein

When is treatment needed, and are stockings enough?

The first test we do is a Doppler ultrasound of the leg veins. It shows which veins are leaking and checks that the deep veins are healthy and free of clots. We may manage mild varicose veins with compression stockings, raising the legs, regular walking and weight control. These ease symptoms but do not remove the veins.

We advise a procedure for veins causing pain, swelling, skin changes, an ulcer or bleeding, and sometimes for troublesome veins without these. EVLA is not suitable for everyone, for example with a current clot in the deep veins, very twisted veins, poor blood supply to the legs, or during pregnancy. In such cases, we may advise conventional surgery or another method.

How is laser treatment for varicose veins done?

  1. Doppler ultrasound of the leg veins to map the leaking veins and check the deep veins
  2. Routine blood tests and a fitness check; the veins to be treated are marked on the skin
  3. Anaesthesia, which may be local numbing around the vein or spinal, as our anaesthetist decides
  4. Under ultrasound guidance, a thin laser fibre is passed into the faulty vein through a needle puncture
  5. Laser heat seals the vein from inside as the fibre is slowly pulled back; bulging side branches may be removed through tiny cuts
  6. A bandage or compression stocking is put on, and you are encouraged to walk the same day

Recovery time after varicose vein laser treatment

We encourage walking from the same day, as it helps blood flow and lowers the risk of clots. Wear the compression stocking as advised, usually for 1 to 2 weeks or longer. Some bruising, tightness or a pulling feeling along the treated vein is common for 1 to 2 weeks and settles. Most people return to light work in a few days. Avoid long standing and heavy exercise for the first 1 to 2 weeks, or as our surgeon advises. We may advise a follow-up Doppler scan.

Precautions after varicose vein laser treatment

A few healthy habits after laser treatment help the leg settle and lower the chance of new veins. We explain them to you before you go home.

  • Walking: walk for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day from the first day. It helps blood flow and lowers the risk of clots.
  • Stockings: wear the compression stocking as advised, usually for 1 to 2 weeks or longer.
  • What to avoid: standing still for long periods, heavy exercise and long journeys without breaks for the first 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Resting: raise your legs on a pillow when you sit or lie down.
  • Food and weight: a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables and enough water, and less fried and salty food, helps you keep a healthy weight and reduces swelling.
  • Work: most people return to light work in a few days.
  • Warning signs: sudden pain and swelling in the calf, or breathlessness, need emergency care. Please call us on +91 72739 94786 or come to our 24-hour emergency.

Benefits

  • Treats the faulty vein from inside through a needle puncture, without a long cut
  • Most patients walk the same day
  • Short hospital stay, usually the same day or 1 day
  • Less pain and bruising than conventional vein stripping for most patients
  • Quicker return to work for many patients
  • Relief from aching, heaviness and swelling, and helps ulcers heal with proper care
Possible risks:

Possible risks include bruising, pain or tightness along the treated vein, a hard, tender vein under the skin, patches of numbness from irritation of small skin nerves, and rarely a skin burn or a clot in the deep veins (DVT). Varicose veins can come back over the years, as other veins may become weak. Our team lowers these risks with Doppler mapping, ultrasound guidance during the procedure, early walking and compression stockings.

Varicose veins treatment cost in Gopalganj and the Ayushman card

The varicose veins treatment cost depends on your veins, so we do not quote one fixed figure. The main factors are the Doppler findings, the method (stockings only, laser ablation, or conventional surgery), whether one or both legs and how many veins are treated, removal of side branches, the type of anaesthesia, the length of stay (usually the same day or 1 day), the room you choose, and the stockings and medicines after the procedure. After the consultation and Doppler report, we give you a clear written estimate before admission, so your family can plan. You can send your reports on WhatsApp to +91 72739 94786 first.

We are empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for general surgery and laparoscopic surgery packages. Whether your treatment and the chosen method are covered depends on the scheme's package list and your eligibility, so please bring your Ayushman card and Aadhaar card and confirm with our Ayushman help desk before admission.

Varicose veins: frequently asked questions

Are varicose veins dangerous?

Many varicose veins are mainly a comfort and appearance problem. But if ignored, some lead to skin darkening, eczema, ulcers near the ankle, painful inflamed veins or bleeding. A varicose vein can bleed heavily if injured: lie down, raise the leg, press firmly with a clean cloth and come to our hospital. Sudden painful swelling of the calf, or breathlessness, needs emergency care.

How is varicose veins laser treatment in Gopalganj done?

First, we do a Doppler ultrasound to map the leaking veins and check the deep veins. On the day, the area is numbed with local anaesthesia, or spinal anaesthesia is used, as our anaesthetist decides. Guided by ultrasound, we pass a thin laser fibre into the faulty vein through a needle puncture, and laser heat seals the vein from inside. We then put on a bandage or compression stocking, and you walk the same day.

What is the varicose veins laser treatment recovery time?

The procedure takes about 45 to 90 minutes, and most people go home the same day or the next day. Some bruising, tightness or a pulling feeling along the treated vein is common for 1 to 2 weeks. Most people return to light work in a few days. Please wear the compression stocking as advised, usually for 1 to 2 weeks or longer, and avoid long standing and heavy exercise for the first 1 to 2 weeks.

Is laser treatment for varicose veins painful?

We numb the area, so most patients feel only mild discomfort during the procedure. Afterwards, some tightness, bruising or a pulling feeling along the treated vein is common for 1 to 2 weeks, and is usually managed with routine pain medicines and walking. Most of our patients find recovery easier than after conventional vein surgery, but it is not completely painless.

Do compression stockings cure varicose veins?

No. Stockings support the veins and ease aching, heaviness and swelling, and they are useful for mild veins, during pregnancy, or when a procedure is not suitable. But they do not repair the faulty valves, and the veins remain. They must be the right size and pressure, and are not suitable for everyone, for example with poor blood supply to the legs. Please ask our doctor before buying them.

Is laser treatment for "nas phoolna" good or bad? What are the side effects?

For suitable veins, endovenous laser treatment is a well-established method, with small puncture wounds and a quicker return to work than conventional vein surgery for most patients. It is not right for everyone, for example with a current deep vein clot, very twisted veins, poor blood supply to the legs, or during pregnancy. Side effects include bruising, tightness and patches of numbness, and rarely a skin burn or a deep vein clot. We explain these before treatment.

What decides the varicose veins treatment cost in Gopalganj?

The cost depends on the Doppler findings, the method (laser ablation or conventional surgery), whether one or both legs and how many veins are treated, the anaesthesia, the length of stay, the room you choose, and the stockings and medicines. We do not quote a figure without examining you. After the consultation and Doppler report, we give you a clear written estimate before admission. You can send your reports on WhatsApp to +91 72739 94786 first.

Is varicose vein treatment covered under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY?

We are empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for general surgery and laparoscopic surgery packages. Whether your varicose vein treatment and the chosen method are covered depends on the scheme's package list and your eligibility. Please bring your Ayushman card and Aadhaar card, and ask our Ayushman help desk to check before admission. For other patients, we explain the expected cost clearly before admission, so that your family can plan.

What precautions should I take after laser treatment for varicose veins?

Walk for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day, starting the same day, and wear the compression stocking as advised. For the first 1 to 2 weeks, avoid standing still for long, heavy exercise and long journeys without breaks. Raise your legs on a pillow when resting. Keep a healthy weight with a balanced diet and enough water. Sudden calf pain and swelling, or breathlessness, needs urgent care, so please call us at once.

Can varicose veins come back after laser treatment?

The treated vein usually stays closed, but new varicose veins can develop over the years, because other veins may become weak, especially with long standing, weight gain or pregnancy. Regular walking, weight control, raising the legs when resting and wearing stockings as advised all help. If new veins appear, we can usually treat them again.
