Paediatric surgery in Gopalganj: what we treat

Paediatric surgery means operations for children. Children are not small adults: their bodies, medicine doses and anaesthesia needs are different, and so are their fears. At Dr. R.K. Thakur Hospital, we offer surgery for common childhood conditions, with care planned around the child and the family.

Common conditions include inguinal hernia (a swelling in the groin), hydrocele (fluid around the testis), undescended testis, treated by orchidopexy, hypospadias (the urine opening is not at the tip of the penis), treated by hypospadias repair, a tight foreskin (phimosis) that may need circumcision, appendicitis, and lumps and abscesses (boils with pus).

A parent can stay with the child before and after the operation, and anaesthesia is given by our anaesthesia specialist, Dr. Neeraj Chaturvedi (MBBS, DA).

Signs in your child that need a surgeon's check

  • A swelling in the groin or scrotum that comes and goes, or gets bigger on crying
  • A testis that cannot be felt in the scrotum
  • The urine opening below the tip of the penis, or a curved penis
  • Ballooning of the foreskin, pain, or repeated infection while passing urine
  • Stomach pain moving to the lower right side, with fever or vomiting
  • A lump under the skin, or a painful red swelling with pus
  • A swallowed coin or small object

Hernia operation in children and other operations: when are they needed?

Some conditions need surgery soon, some can wait, and some settle on their own. Our surgeon examines your child and explains the right timing:

  • Inguinal hernia does not go away by itself and is usually repaired soon after diagnosis. A swelling that becomes hard, painful or will not go back, with crying or vomiting, is an emergency.
  • Hydrocele in babies often settles by 1 to 2 years of age; we consider surgery if it persists or changes size.
  • Undescended testis surgery is usually advised before about 18 months of age.
  • Hypospadias repair is often planned between 6 and 18 months. Please do not get the child circumcised first, as the foreskin may be needed for the repair.
  • Tight foreskin is normal in young boys and usually loosens with age.
  • Appendicitis needs urgent care; see appendix surgery.
  • A swallowed coin stuck in the food pipe can be removed by endoscopy.

For newborn surgery and conditions needing a neonatal ICU, we guide you to a suitable higher centre.

How is a child's operation done? Step by step

  1. OPD visit: our surgeon examines your child, answers your questions, and advises tests such as blood tests or an ultrasound if needed.
  2. Anaesthesia check: our anaesthesia specialist checks your child and tells you exactly when to stop milk, food and water before the operation.
  3. Day of surgery: a parent stays with the child until the child goes into the operation theatre.
  4. Most children's operations are done under general anaesthesia, so the child sleeps through it. Our anaesthesia specialist chooses the safest method and plans pain relief.
  5. After the operation, the child wakes up in recovery and the parent is back with the child as soon as possible. Feeding restarts once the child is fully awake.
  6. Discharge with clear instructions on wound care, bathing, medicines and the follow-up visit.

Recovery after a child's operation

Children usually recover quickly. Give pain medicines as prescribed, and let your child eat normally once fully awake. Keep the wound clean and dry and follow the bathing instructions. Most children return to school within a few days to a week; avoid rough play, cycling and climbing for a few weeks after hernia or genital surgery, as advised. Please come back early if there is fever, increasing swelling, bleeding, pus, or difficulty passing urine. Attend the follow-up visit so our surgeon can check healing.

Feeding, wound care and precautions for your child at home

Children usually recover quickly. At home, these steps help, and we explain them to you before discharge.

  • Feeding: once your child is fully awake, start with sips of water, then breast milk, milk or light food such as khichdi, dal-rice or banana. Return to normal food when your child is hungry.
  • Pain relief: give pain medicine exactly as prescribed, because children's doses depend on weight. Do not give extra medicines on your own.
  • Wound care and bathing: keep the wound clean and dry, and follow the bathing instructions given at discharge. Change nappies often after groin or genital surgery.
  • Activity: most children return to school within a few days to a week. Avoid rough play, cycling and climbing for a few weeks after hernia or genital surgery.
  • Follow-up: attend the check-up so our surgeon can see the healing.
  • Warning signs: fever, increasing swelling, bleeding, pus, repeated vomiting or difficulty passing urine. Please call us on +91 72739 94786 or come to our 24-hour emergency.

Benefits

  • Timely surgery can prevent problems such as a stuck hernia, and can reduce future problems from an undescended testis
  • Child-friendly care, with a parent staying with the child
  • Anaesthesia by a specialist, with attention to fasting and pain relief
  • Many children go home the same day or the next day
  • Lab, ultrasound, X-ray and pharmacy under one roof at our hospital in Gopalganj
Possible risks:

Most common children's operations are routine, but every operation carries some risk. Anaesthesia risk is low in healthy children, and we keep it low with a pre-anaesthesia check and correct fasting. There can be bleeding, wound infection or swelling. A hernia can come back, though this is uncommon. After hypospadias repair, a small urine leak (fistula) or narrowing can occur and may need another small operation. Our surgeon explains the risks of your child's operation before you decide.

Cost of a child's operation in Gopalganj and the Ayushman card

Parents often ask us about the cost of a child's operation first. We do not quote one fixed figure, because it depends on the operation (for example hernia, hydrocele, orchidopexy, hypospadias repair or circumcision), the tests needed, the anaesthesia, the length of stay, the room you choose and the medicines after discharge. Hypospadias repair and appendix surgery usually need a longer stay than hernia or hydrocele repair. After the consultation and reports, we give you a clear written estimate before admission, so your family can plan. You can send your child's reports on WhatsApp to +91 72739 94786 first.

We are empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for general surgery and laparoscopic surgery packages. Not every speciality package is part of our empanelment, so whether your child's operation is covered depends on the package list and your family's eligibility. Please bring the Ayushman card and Aadhaar card and ask our Ayushman help desk before admission.

Children's surgery: frequently asked questions

How is paediatric surgery in Gopalganj done for common problems like hernia?

After an OPD check and any tests, our anaesthesia specialist, Dr. Neeraj Chaturvedi, examines your child and gives exact fasting times. Most children's operations are done under general anaesthesia, so the child sleeps through it. For a groin hernia, our surgeon ties off the hernia sac through a small cut in the groin crease. A parent stays with the child until the theatre and again after waking. Many children go home the same day or the next day.

Will my child's hernia go away without an operation?

No. An inguinal hernia in a child does not close by itself, and we usually repair it soon after diagnosis, because the intestine can get stuck in it. A swelling that becomes hard, painful or red, or will not go back, especially with crying or vomiting, is an emergency. A navel (umbilical) hernia in a baby is different and often closes on its own over the first few years.

How long does a hernia operation in children take, and what is the recovery time?

A child's hernia or hydrocele operation usually takes under an hour, and many children go home the same day or the next day. Children usually recover quickly, and most return to school within a few days to a week. Avoid rough play, cycling and climbing for a few weeks, as advised. Hypospadias repair and appendix surgery take longer and need a longer stay; our surgeon explains the plan for your child.

My son's foreskin does not pull back. Does he need circumcision?

Not always. In young boys the foreskin is normally tight and usually loosens with age. Please do not pull it back forcefully, as this can cause tears and scarring. Bring your son to our surgeon if there is ballooning with difficulty passing urine, repeated infection, pain, or a white, scarred foreskin. Some boys need only a cream, and some need circumcision.

My son's andkosh (testis) cannot be felt in the scrotum. Does he need an operation?

Please show him to a surgeon. Some testes come down by themselves in the first few months after birth, but one that has not come down usually needs an operation called orchidopexy, which we usually advise before about 18 months of age. Do not wait for puberty. Timely surgery helps protect the testis and makes later self-checks easier. Our surgeon examines your son and may advise an ultrasound in some cases.

How long should my child fast before surgery?

Fasting times for children depend on age and on what they take, such as breast milk, other milk, food or clear water. Our anaesthesia specialist will tell you the exact times. Please follow them carefully: too little fasting is unsafe for anaesthesia, and too much fasting makes a child weak and irritable. If you are unsure, please call us the day before.

Can a parent stay with the child in hospital?

Yes. A parent can stay with the child before the operation, until the child goes into the operation theatre, and again after the child wakes up. During the hospital stay, a parent stays with the child in the ward or room. Please bring the child's favourite toy or cloth, a feeding bottle if used, all reports, and your Ayushman card if you have one.

What should my child eat after surgery, and what precautions should we take at home?

Once your child is fully awake, start with sips of water, then breast milk, milk or light food such as khichdi, dal-rice or banana, and return to normal food when the child is hungry. Give pain medicine exactly as prescribed. Keep the wound clean and dry and follow the bathing instructions. Avoid rough play, cycling and climbing for a few weeks after hernia or genital surgery. Please come back early for fever, swelling, pus or difficulty passing urine.

What decides the cost of my child's operation, and does the Ayushman card cover it?

The cost depends on the operation, the tests, the anaesthesia, the length of stay, the room you choose and the medicines. After the consultation, we give you a clear written estimate before admission. We are empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for general surgery and laparoscopic surgery packages, but not every speciality package is part of our empanelment. Please bring the Ayushman card and Aadhaar card and ask our Ayushman help desk before admission.

Is paediatric surgery in Gopalganj safe for young children?

Every operation carries some risk, but for common childhood operations the risk is low when the right checks are done. Anaesthesia is planned for your child's age and weight by our anaesthesia specialist, Dr. Neeraj Chaturvedi (MBBS, DA), with monitoring during and after surgery. Our surgeon explains the risks before you give consent. We do not have a NICU, so for newborns and babies who may need a neonatal ICU, we guide you to a higher centre.

Who is the best child surgeon in Gopalganj?

Choosing a surgeon for your child is a personal decision for every family. At our hospital, surgery is led by Dr. R.K. Thakur, our founder and chief surgeon, MS (General Surgery), with 16+ years of experience, 10,000+ surgeries and experience at IGIMS Patna and Lady Hardinge Medical College. We live near Siwan. Is children's surgery near Siwan available, or must we go to Patna?

Related treatments

Orchidopexy

With orchidopexy, we bring an undescended testis down into the scrotum and fix it there. We usually advise surgery by 6 to 18 months of age to protect fertility and allow easy checks later in life.

Hypospadias Repair

With hypospadias repair, we correct a urine opening that is not at the tip of the penis. We commonly perform the surgery between 6 and 18 months of age, sometimes in two stages.

Circumcision

Circumcision removes the foreskin of the penis. We perform it to treat a tight foreskin (phimosis), paraphimosis and repeated infections, and also for religious or personal reasons, usually as day-care.
